To renovate an existing pool deck to solve issues of continuous deck maintenance and repairs
The existing deck included two areas at either end of a swimming pool. The deck was low set with hardwood bearers and treated pine joisting. The decking was 90mm merbau boards, with no spacing between boards. Significant decay was found in the boards and joisting. The client indicated that some decking required to be replaced annually and the deck had become dangerous and not an enjoyable place to be.
Inorder to solve the client's issues the following problems needed to be considered
To resolve these problems it was decided to replace all decking with 120mm composite decking, all joisting and some bearers with new hardwood. Earth was additionally escavated from below the deck to increase sub-deck ventilation. Plastic liner was placed over bear earth to reduce moisture and weed growth. Rubber strips were also applied to all joists
Other items added to the area were an additional gate to the pool fence and a cantlever umbrella.
